There is a large body of research showing the positive benefits of having trees in cities.
Based on this research, Cecil Konijnendijk has developed a principle that serves as a working method with clear rules and objectives. This principle is called the 3-30-300 rule and is based on the following:
- That all residents should be able to see 3 trees from their window.
- 30% tree canopy coverage in each residential area.
- Everyone should have 300 meters from the nearest park or green space.
Working with 3-30-300 is thus an effective way to make cities more resilient and residents healthier, both physically and mentally.
Services
We help you implement the 3-30-300 rule through analysis, action needs and follow-up.
- 3 - We can help you create a tree planting strategy and use GIS analysis to determine the distance between trees and buildings.
- 30 - We can measure the canopy cover in your city. The measurements are made at different scales: overall for the whole city, by area or as a detailed canopy cover map.
- 300 - We can provide analysis on how many people live within 300 meters of a green space. We can also help you develop methods to measure green space quality, which is often not included in national surveys.
